Nicole Shieh E-Lyn was called as a Barrister-at-Law in England and Wales in 2021, and subsequently admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in February 2022. Before joining Messrs. Goh Cia Yee, she practised at Messrs. Wong & Partners, Messrs. Halim Hong & Quek and Messrs. Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill.

Nicole has managed several ongoing retainer arrangements for multinational corporations across a diverse range of industries, including fast-moving consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, luxury retail, financial technology and other technologydriven businesses. In that capacity, she provided continuing legal support across the Asia-Pacific region. Under these arrangements, Nicole operated as an extension of the clients’ in-house legal and business teams rather than as counsel engaged only for isolated legal questions.

She managed recurring and simultaneous instructions across multiple jurisdictions, stakeholders and business functions, while adapting her advice to each client’s commercial priorities, internal approval processes and risk appetite. Her retained-counsel experience encompassed the end-to-end management of commercial-contracting workstreams, including the prioritisation of instructions, coordination of regional stakeholders, negotiation with counterparties, escalation of material legal and regulatory risks, management of document turnaround and maintenance of consistency across recurring contracts and preferred contractual positions.

This experience required Nicole to balance legal protection with commercial urgency. She regularly worked within short turnaround times and clients’ internal approval structures, coordinating with various business units to progress transactions efficiently without losing sight of material legal concerns.

Nicole also practises in dispute resolution, with experience in technology, corporate, commercial, regulatory and insurance disputes, including high-value contractual disputes, cross-border technology disputes, arbitration-related proceedings and competition-law litigation.

Brian (Baraneetharan a/l Kishur Kumar) holds an LL.B (Hons) from Multimedia University (Melaka) and was admitted to the legal profession after completing his pupillage in 2023. From early on, he has taken a practical approach to learning the law, gaining exposure to court proceedings and legal practice even before graduating.

In 2019, Brian interned at the High Court of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, where he observed court proceedings and developed an understanding of how cases are managed at the High Court level. He later continued his training in private practice at Messrs Ganeson Gomathy, Fadzlin, M. Nava & Co., where he was introduced to both criminal law and civil litigation.

Brian completed his pupillage at Messrs Akram Hizri Azad & Azmir, where he assisted in a range of criminal matters. Following his pupillage, he was retained as an Associate. During his time there, he was involved in pre-trial preparation, trial work, and advisory matters, handling cases under various provisions of Malaysian law, including offences under the Penal Code, the Sexual Offences Against Children Act, the Immigration Act 1959, and the Customs Act 1967.

He later returned to Kuala Lumpur and broadened his practice to include both criminal and civil matters at Messrs Valen. His work included matters involving land law and financial crime, particularly issues relating to the National Land Code and anti-money laundering legislation. Brian is currently practising at Messrs Goh Cia Yee, where he continues to assist in a wide range of criminal cases.

Brian approaches each case with care and attention to detail. His experience across different areas of practice allows him to provide practical and considered advice to clients facing both criminal and civil legal issues.

In addition to his practice, Brian has written articles for both local and international legal publications, reflecting his ongoing interest in legal developments and his commitment to staying informed.
